  INTRODUCTORY COURSES

RYA Practical Courses

Sail Cruising 'Start Sailing' Practical Course (Tidal) - Level 1

The Sail Cruising Start Sailing Course is an entry level course which can be run in conjunction with a Basic Skills Course. It is great for families or individuals who would benefit from being trained in the basics of sail theory and manoeuvring a cruising yacht under sail. Recently developed this is designed for transfer of the dinghy sailor into something a little larger.

 Start Yachting Practical Course (Tidal)

This course provides a short introduction, typically over a weekend, to sail cruising for complete beginners. By the end of the course participants will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, rope work and be aware of safety on board.

Sail Cruising 'Basic Skills' Practical Course (Tidal) - Level 2

The Sail Cruising Basic Skills Course is designed to build on the skills gained during the Sail Cruising Start Sailing Course. The main focus remains on the skills required to sail a cruising yacht. This helps all the sailing family work as a team whilst getting used to manourvering, mooring, sail handling including reefing.

ICC International Certificate of Competance - Direct Assessment

This is the minimum level recognised qualification required to Skipper a sailing cruiser overseas. The Interntional Certificate of Competance (ICC) for short can be taken by direct assessment. This can by either on your own vessel or our yacht which ever option is preferred. This offers a practical opportunity to skipper a vessel whilst under assessment.

  INTERMEDIATE COURSES

Day Skipper
Practical Course (Tidal)

After a few days sea time and acquiring Day Skipper theory knowledge, this five day Practical Course provides a comprehensive application of the chart work, navigation and meteorological theory. An invaluable insight into using the Day Skipper theory by learning how to make decisions on board. If successful the candidate has achieved the minimum standard to independently charter a cruising yacht and may apply to the for an International Certificate of Competance (ICC) which permits charter abroad.

Competent Crew Practical Course (Tidal)

The aim of the course is to introduce the complete beginner to cruise under sail, thereby enabling them to be an active crew member. Candidates holding a Start Yachting Certificate may complete the Competent Crew Practical Course in just three days. The Standard Course will be achieved following completion of five days on board, a minimum of one hundred miles at sea in tidal waters and at least four night hours.

  ADVANCED COURSES

'Yachtmaster' Preparation for Examination

Primarily a five day refresher, this course is for the Yachtmaster Coastal & Yachtmaster Offshore Examinations - success in passing this hurdle results in Certificates of Competence at either Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore levels. This complements the Coastal Skipper Practical training learning experience. It perfects and practices the skills and techniques required to skipper safely on offshore passages by day and night including passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, yacht handling under sail and power, adverse weather and emergencies.

Coastal Skipper Practical Course (Tidal)

The aim of this five day course is to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night. Involving an overnight passage it’s ideal for competent Day Skippers who want to move on to more extended cruising in unfamiliar waters, in more challenging sailing conditions, and for longer periods of time. If successful the Skipper can be confident they have skills to handle a vessel in more demanding situations than Day Skipper. For example limited passage making during darkness in less familiar waters
