Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore ONLINE Course
Aim: Advanced course in navigation and meterology for students for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore.
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea
Students are required to have full knowledge of the regulations before completion of the shorebased course for Coastal Skipper & Yachmaster Offshore. There is insufficient time available in this course to teach the subject fully. Students are reminded to refresh their knowledge using RYA booklet G2 which provides a detailed explanation of the IRPCS and provides students with the necessary knowledge
Pre-Course Experience
Day Skipper Theory knowledge is assumed. We suggest review of RYA texts using the link below if you wish to read around the subjects and cover them in greater detail.
Ability after Course
Advanced navigation and meterology skills suitable for providing the theory to Skipper a small vessel offshore by day and night.

The Position Line
Sources of position lines, transits, compass bearings, risings and dipping distances, radio position lines and depth contours.
The Magnetic Compass
Allowance for variation. Change of variation with time and position. Siting compass and causes of deviation, allowance for deviation, steering and handbearing compasses, swing for deviation (but not correction).
Position Fixing

Buoyage
IALA system buoyage in Region A, Limitations of buoys as navigational aids.
Lights
Charateristics, Ranges - visual, luminous and nominal ranges, Light lists - Admiralty and Yachtsmen's Almanacs
Pilotage
Harbour regulations and control signals, Method of pre-planning, Clearing lines.
Echo Sounder
Principle of operation, Rotating neon, dial and pointer, recording. Reduction of soundings. "Second trace" echoes.
Radio Aids to Navigation
Radio beacons, ALRS Vol II abd Yachtsmen's Almanacs, D/F recievers, types of aerials. Methods of operation. Audio and visual null points. Reciprocal bearings. Basic knowledge of hyperbolic systems, their capabilities and limitations.
Logs
Types and Pricipals of operation, comparison of towed, presure, impeller and sonic.
Deck Log
Importance of log as yachts official document. Layout of log, hourly and occassional entries.
Meteorology
Basic met.terms, the Beaufort Scale. Air masses. Cloud types. Weather patterns associated pressure and frontal systems. Weather forecasts and simple met. instruments. Land and Sea breezes. Sea fog - forecasting.
Anchoring
Types of anchors and principles of operation. Selection of an anchor berth.
Rules of the Road
A sound knowledge of the International Rules for Prevention of Collisions at Sea, except Anexes I and III.
Safety at Sea
Personal safety, use of lifejackets, safety harnesses and lifelines.
Signals
Principles of signalling by flags and morse.
Navigation in Restricted Visibility
Precautions to be taken in fog. Limitations to the safe navigation imposed by fog.
Passage Planning and Making
Preparations of charts and notebook for route planning and use at sea. Customs regulations as they apply to yachts. Routine for navigating a yacht in coastal waters. Strategy for course laying
